The Story of God
The Story of God
10.30.2011 → 04.01.2012
The End
We live in a world where everything is falling apart, a world where it is easy to become discouraged. Jesus is coming to make all of those things right.
The Nations
As God’s Church, we are not to show favoritism but are to love and to join God’s redemptive work in all nations.
The Church
As we look at the early Church, we see five important distinctions that sets God’s people apart.
The Spirit
We come out of the Resurrection story having been identified and commissioned to embrace Jesus’ mission and make it our own. But we must be empowered…and it’s there we discover the gift of God’s Holy Spirit.
The Commission
The Gospel story changes focus with the Great Commission as God’s people become His plan to redeem the world, sent out with His Spirit to make disciples everywhere.
The Savior
In examining the story of the last supper, we see that Jesus came to give His life as a ransom for us all, to free us from the bondage of sin, and to free us to life as His Father intended.
The Servant
God’s story crescendos when Jesus arrives on earth. But God’s people quickly learn He is not the Messiah they anticipated, looking to serve rather than be served.
The Waiting
Our study of the Old Testament ends in Malachi where we see God bring four charges against Israel before 500 years of silence.
The Exile
In Ezekiel, we see God bring life to what was dead. Through his prophet, God draws glory to Himself and His name…and continues to do this today.
The Destruction
It is still possible to love Jesus and still ask questions. The road map lies in pleading, patience, and praising.
The Kingdom
In 2 Samuel we learn, through David, this simple truth: our God is with us…wherever we are.
The Concession
In 1 Samuel, we see the Israelites needing protection from themselves as they desire a human king instead of God as their King.
The Presence
God has come down to Earth to meet with His creation. He walked with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. He was present in the tabernacle and the temple. He came to Earth in human form as Jesus, and he continues to walk with us now through His Holy Spirit.
The Substitute
Some of us don’t understand the value of sacrifice in the old testament, but it is about atonement. The old testament idea of sacrifice mirrors the sacrifice of Jesus.
The Law
Often seen as a burden or kill-joy, we reclaim the law as a good gift from a good God that loves His people and wants them to know Him, know themselves, and know how best to live.
The Exodus
Through the exodus of God’s people out of Egypt, we learn about our Redeemer and our redemption.
The Call
Starting with Abram, God places a call on His people’s lives to believe in, trust, and follow Him.
The Fall
Original sin enters God’s story as the first man and woman are deceived, choosing autonomy over obedience.
The Beginning
As we begin our journey through the Story of God, we start in the Garden of Eden with God and creation.
The Story of God
We begin a series of studying the Bible so that we can understand God’s story, find our place in it, and be able to articulate and live it out.
