The purpose of these gatherings is simply to create some space for people to begin meeting each other and interact with the vision and values of Basileia. It is for those who are interested in seeing where all of this is going, and have a sense this may be a community of faith that they could call home. We are still very much in the initial stages of development and are building towards being fully "public" in February of 2010.
These times are not a "showcase" in any way, nor an attempt to "do" church ... so much will be shaped and re-shaped over the next few months. We just want to come to meet with God and each other to explore what He is saying to us about our place in Hollywood/LA. There will be a time of worship as well as both corporate and individual prayer. We are trying hard to create an informal atmosphere and yet at the same time give some direction and structure to the time. There will be sharing of vision and heart - but with room for significant interaction with each other.
We are at a stage now where it is totally appropriate to begin to invite people who you know that might dig becoming a part of something like this. Also, our vibe is conducive to people showing up who would not consider themselves followers of Jesus - so don't limit your invites to "churched" people if you have any friend at all who might find Thursday night a cool thing to come to.
Also - there has been another huge step forward in the development of Basileia, as we now have our non-profit status enough in place that we are able to begin to legally collect financial resources. You can now begin to give towards the vision of Basileia and we in turn are able to give tax receipts for your donations.
Be great to see you there ... and awesome if you'd pray for the night over the next few days.
Let the kingdom come,
David and Anita Ruis
holly pinkham, a part of the ROCKHARBOR community and someone who feels called to the church plant in hollywood, attended basileia's vision service last week. this is her account of the evening:
the service began with a welcome and time of worship, like a typical church gathering, but at that point, things shifted as the Holy Spirit led. worship was temporarily interrupted to pray for those who were feeling a desperate loneliness, which this city tends to evoke, and we all gathered around those who came forward to lay hands and pray for them. after some thoughts about culture and the church in acts 5, community was facilitated by breaking into smaller groups and talking about how the passage spoke to us. the night ended in more prayer followed by a time of mingling and getting to know our family in this brand new community.
there is a clear passion to reach the city, from those that have it all to those that have nothing. at this point, the leaders are unsure of whether that will be through traditional church services or other means. unsure of who it will include or where God will take it. but they are sure of their purpose…basileia…to “let the kingdom come” to the city of hollywood.
for others of us that attended, what stood out to you?
for those of us that didn't attend, what's one way you will commit to praying for this church plant in progress?
