Christmas. It’s the most wonderful time of the year….the time that can bring families together, friends together, and where peace on earth and good will toward men seem just a little more apparent.
We all want Christmas to be full of meaning and life for us. But, how many of us find that and how many of us find…
Shopping, shopping, and more shopping
Jam-packed schedules
Unending To Do lists
Debt
Stress
Constant traffic
Bigger debt
When it’s over, do we start the New Year filled with life from the season? Or are we just happy to get through it?
At ROCKHARBOR, we try to step into a different sort of Christmas season…one marked by spending differently. We try to buy less, yet give more. Here are some ways that Holiday Giving has played out in our communities:
Thanksgiving in a Backpack
ROCKHARBOR has partnered with Giving Children Hope through this “We’ve Got Your Back” program. Together, our family fills 1,000 backpacks with food items for a Thanksgiving meal. We then give them to a participating school so a teacher can deliver them to their students and provide their families with a Thanksgiving experience
The Giving Tree
Through this initiative, our community purchases gift cards to benefit students halfway across the world and students in our own cities. Some of the cards are used to bless the students connected to our global partners in Mexico, India, South Africa, and Uganda. Others will be used to furnish small Christmas stores at several local schools where low-income parents can come and “shop” for their kids with dignity.
Justice Warehouse Sale
Since 2010, we have held a Justice Warehouse Sale for an evening of sensible holiday shopping. Together, we bring our loved ones’ wish lists and shop with savvy from five justice-based organizations showcasing their latest styles. Merchandise has come from organizations such as Krochet Kids, 31 Bits, International Princess Project, Market of Hope, and Remnant Uganda.
From headwear to necklaces, bracelets to t-shirts, each item purchased has benefited individuals and families in Uganda, India, or South Africa.
