Big God Story 2010
VBS: The Production
Each summer, we bring kids from around the county to a week-long experience centered on Jesus and His message. For several years, we held one single VBS at ROCKHARBOR’s Central Campus and tried to pack as many kids into our building as we could. Kids and volunteers worshipped Jesus and were able to enjoy production components that the venue offered.
VBS: Into our Communities
But in 2009 as God was shifting ROCKHARBOR’s focus to be a church of communities living out the gospel together in our cities, our Families Ministry began to dream of a VBS in line with this vision. Because while each previous VBS held at RH was successful by most accounts, they did draw primarily Christian kids that already know Jesus.
So, starting in 2009, RH began to do VBS differently. Instead of bringing our kids to the experience, we brought the experience to as many kids as we could. VBS began to happen in venues across Orange County. It happened in a low income neighborhood in Costa Mesa. It happened in a Senior Center in Orange. In irvine. In newport beach. In a total of 27 locations where 900 kids heard the big God story…including 70% that were unchurched.
A year later in 2010, we again took VBS into our communities for the sake of the world knowing Jesus. We celebrated VBS happening in 15 cities, with 300 volunteers helping, and more than 1,200 kids hearing the gospel…65% of which were un-churched. In all, 275 kids made decisions for Jesus.
As we look to the future, we couldn’t be more excited about taking the games, the arts and crafts, the fun, the laughter, the Bible stories, the volunteers, and, most importantly, the Gospel, into our communities.
