Worship

The ultimate purpose of our lives is to worship the One we were created by and for. What does worship look like? It’s recognizing and declaring God’s holiness and our utter dependence on Him. It’s giving God what He deserves: our attention, our recognition, our hearts and minds, and our response.

As we come together to seek God through His word and through prayer, He reveals Himself to us. And when we see God for who He is, we can’t help but respond. Both individually and in community, we respond in a number of ways—each different than the other, but all in humble worship of the One for whom we exist.

Music

Each weekend, you’ll experience a lot of music in ROCKHARBOR’s celebration services. It’s how we usually begin our time together, to focus our minds and hearts on who we have gathered to celebrate. Music is also one of the ways we respond to God after studying His word and asking the Holy Spirit to show us how He wants to change our lives through what we’ve heard.

More than mere music, songs of worship are prayers of thanks, awe, need, and devotion that prepare our hearts to be changed.

Prayer

Prayer is responding to God by actually having a conversation with Him. Each week, following our study of God’s word, we take time to respond to what we’ve heard, through prayer.

Sometimes we simply sit quietly, allowing space for God’s Spirit to speak to us individually. At other times we may be given an opportunity to pray together as a community. And there are always people from within our church community who are available to pray with and for anyone who would like prayer for something specific. They are available during, or after each service. Prayer needs can also be submitted by writing them on a prayer card, found at the crosses around the gathering space. The cards can be placed in the offering boxes, and will be given to a team of people who are committed to pray for our church community each week.

Communion

Communion is worship through reverent remembrance. It is a direct and obedient response to one of Jesus’ last instructions to his disciples. By eating and drinking a small portion of bread and juice, we remember Christ’s death paid for our sins, His constant presence and love in our lives and His promise to return.

Communion is specifically for those who have placed their faith in Jesus and asked him to lead their lives. Anyone who has done this is welcome to take communion during the response part of our service. Communion elements are available each weekend at the crosses.

“On the night when he was betrayed, the lord Jesus took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ in the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, ‘this cup is the new covenant between god and you, sealed by the shedding of my blood. Do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it.’ for every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the lord’s death until he comes again.”
